Shannon "Chief" Cherry This is pure harmonic and melodic joy. And every great album tells a compelling story. This one is no different. I love the walking meter shifts (illusory) in the first track. Reminds me of some of Branford Marsalis’ earlier work with Milt Hinton, but with added modern harmonic work- so the homework to achieve this kind of sound... it’s been done. and Barry is doin’ it to death. ❤️

Max Dread I have become a big fan of this record. The blurb referencing Ellington and Mingus is right on. I have been listening to a lot of Ellington small groups lately, and the flavor is there for sure. But Eric Dolphy comes to mind sometimes...and my favorite track, Assumptions, has the insistence that I love from East Broadway Rundown. Despite all my references to other artists, this is a great record, appropriately titled; a unique statement in its own right that should be well remembered. Favorite track: Assumptions.

about

“It’s like if Duke Ellington met Ornette Coleman. The melodies throughout the album complement each other in a way that creates a powerful thread of integrity and continuity between them.”
